Today the US lost to Japan in the final match of the Women’s World Cup. Each team was the underdog in its own way. Japan had never won against the US and had beat all odds as well as the host country, Germany, to make the finals. This US team had to earn respect along with its berth and defeated Brazil in the most exciting soccer game EVER to make the finals. The US dominated play, especially with countless shots on goal in the first 30 minutes, but Japan was the sentimental favorite, playing for a nation drained by a tsunami and its tragic aftermath. In the end, determined by penalty shots, the better team won, I suppose. I’m sad as an American, but the storyteller in me relishes this result.
